Reconstructing Blackness in Grassroots Interactions Between Chinese and Africans in Guangzhou

Overview:

This article examines relations between African traders and rural-to-urban Chinese migrants in Guangzhou. The author argues that racial learning between non-elite Chinese and Africans involves mutual stereotypes and racialization on both sides and leads to alternative constructions of blackness that move beyond the hegemonic black/white binary that is characteristic in the Global North.
