Overview:

This article introduces the latest consultation paper published by the Chinese government stating that “non-public capital shall not engage in newsgathering, editing and broadcasting business”. This includes news publications, channels, columns and public accounts (Public accounts on WeChat and Weibo that identify as a news outlet can not be taken over by non-public capital). This suggests an effort made by the state to ban foreign outlets from publishing news that the state does not agree with. In other words, the mainstream media will only be sharing information that the state wishes the people to know.
