Publication date:

October 1, 2021

Xin Jin, Gideon Bolt and Pieter Hooimeijer

This paper seeks to understand the concentration of Africans in the city of Guangzhou and the factors determining these formations. The authors conduct a study connecting the formation of African clusters to African business places in the city. The paper uses the study to ascertain whether the concept of the ethnic enclave - which they define as residential spatial concentrations that fulfil numerous social and economic functions for its inhabitants- applies to the African concentration in China.
