Conflating Blackness and Rurality: Urban Politics and Social Control of Africans in Guangzhou, China
This article seeks to understand the heavy-handed treatment of Africans in Guangzhou during the pandemic and whether it was an isolated event. The author argues that municipal politics is behind the social control of Guangzhou’s African communities. According to the author, the African communities’ ties to rurality and the status of Dengfeng (one of the most well known areas where Africans reside) as an urban village, has become a 'roadblock' in the Guangzhou's urban upgrade and shaped the approach of the government towards Africans.
